Intro to Search Engine Optimisation
Saturday, June 23rd, 2007In this introduction to search engine optimisation, I hope to provide you with a general understanding of what search engine optimisation or SEO really is.
Search engine optimisation is fundamentally, the process of strategically preparing a website to achieve high visibility in a web search engine.
It is important to understand that over the years search engine optimisation has become a complex and organic process. Results cannot be seen immediately and there are no quick solutions.
Beware of companies that promise you results overnight and guaranteed high rankings, it is almost impossible to guarantee high ranking unless the keyword you are using is unique to your site only.
Many people fall prey to fraudsters offering GREAT RESULTS overnight, for a fraction of the price. Such scams will not only leave you disappointed, but might also get your site banned from search indexes.
A few things that should be taken into consideration when optimising your website are;
1. Page Titles
Never use the same page title for more than one page, it makes it harder for search engines to index your site, make sure your titles are relevant to the content of the page. Your Page title is arguably the most important part of the optimisation process; it also gives potential visitors a better understanding of the page content.
2. Page Content
Any search engine optimisation expert will tell you that writing good, site relevant content is the best way to get your site higher visibility on search engines. Your content needs to be useful to the people you are trying to target and is the best way to ensure repeat visitors.
Make sure you update your content regularly. If you find it hard to create your own content, get the help of someone or ask your web design company to help you optimise your wording.
3. Meta-tags
Since meta-tags have been abused by many spammers, most search engines do not place much value on them anymore.
4. Submission process
Submit your site once and wait for the results to show on the relevant engines, it will take a few weeks for the search engine to index your website, so be patient, and it is important that you do not constantly resubmit your website as this will go against you. You should also consider submitting your site to directories that are relevant to your website.
5.
Firstly, NEVER use link farms; this will definitely get your website black listed, if not immediately perhaps in a few weeks. Incoming links are very important and help a lot with SEO by increasing a websites Page Rank. You must however be careful about which websites you link you, you must not link to a site that search engines consider a “bad apple”.
Although incoming links (even from bad sites) do not affect your Page Rank in a negative manner, if you have links from your site to any of these “bad sites” you will be seen as approving such sites and thus your Page Rank WILL be negatively affected.
I hope you have gained a basic understanding of search engine optimisation. This should help you get started and help you avoid spending money on fraudulent claims.
I will be posting further articles on search engine optimisation shortly, these articles will attempt to explain other advanced techniques used to optimise websites, please check the forum in a few weeks for an update.
